Year 4 - Day 7 - Juno to Fort Lauderdale FL

Image
Windy, can you say wind! If I was at home and walked outside my door, I would have turned around and walked back in to have another cup of coffee! But… We departed normal time, but it seemed to be much less humid this morning. That lasted about an hour and then … Actually the wind was not too bad, but then we turned directly east, crossed a drawbridge, then it hit us directly in the face! As the day progressed and we turned corners, the wind was not too bad. Every once in a while, a building would deflect the wind and it would hit us straight on in the face, almost stopping our forward progress.  Down shift at least one, maybe two gears, then proceed. And as quick as it hit us, it would disappear.  Several photos of Riviera Beach and the port at that location.  Several photos of the Flagler Hotel and the surrounding area from Flagler Road. We left the mainland and headed toward A1A. I was completely unaware of where we were and all of a sudden there were police car...

Year 4 - Day 6 - Vero Beach to Juno FL

Image
Departed Vero Beach around the same time as other location, around 8:15 a.m. Weather warm, in high 70 degrees already.  Our first break stop ironically was across the road from the Navy UDT - Navy SEAL Museum. Really wish we had the time to stop in and spend some time there, but knowing Gary and museums, and me with military subjects, it would have consumed most of the morning! It was not much longer down the road and Bob had another puncture. We found a piece of glass in his front tire.  He borrowed a tube from Gary and we were back on the road. While waiting for him to repair his tire, we saw two Brightline trains go past our location. The Brightline is a high speed train serving five locations in Florida. I caught a still of the first one and a video of the second train. We elected to divert from the ECG path for the next 19 miles or so to avoid riding down Route 1 and the heavy high speed traffic. It was a very pleasant ride along Indian River. it rained for several...

Year 4 - Day 5 - Cocoa to Vero Beach Fl

Image
Initially I was going to call this day uneventful! But that all changed quickly! We left Cocoa hotel about the normal 8:15 a.m. at a temp near 80 degrees. Because all the hotels near the beach were in excess of $400 per night, I elected to reserve a hotel further west near Route 95. so our first order of business was to travel several miles back east toward the coast to rejoin the greenway.  If you note the profile, there are three high peaks, each one represents a bridge that we crossed! Our primary source of elevation gain today! The Holiday Inn Express in Cocoa, being near Cape Canaveral, has labeled their large auditorium the Space Coast Convention Center. Apparently this weekend there is a large gathering of scrapbooking persons! Lots of older ladies with funny sweatshirts and carts full of miscellaneous scrapbooking items! Sorry that we were not able to stay and enjoy the festivities! (Not really!) A photo below of a small bird that we have seen multiple places through...

Year 4 - Day 4 - Deltona to Cocoa FL

Image
Windy, that is the word for today, Windy all day. It seems no matter where we turned or rode, we were riding into the wind. We crossed the street from the hotel and were on the first trail, the Spring to Spring Trail.  A story board along the rail trail explaining how important the black population was to the railroad. This trail is connected to the East Central Rail Trail. We continued on this trail for many miles, 25 to 30 until we entered Titusville. These trails make up the Coast to Coast Trail system in Florida. See the Florida Trail map that is posted at the trailheads and the obverse which shows the trail in Volusia County Florida. When we got into Titusville, we intended to eat lunch. We asked some folks, that had parked in the central parking area in town and were walking toward downtown, where would be a good place to get a burger in town. It was suggested that we go to Burger Rob’s. It did not disappoint! Gary had a hot dog that had to be a foot long, I had a smash burge...
