Year 3 - Day 6 Wilmington NC to N. Myrtle Beach NC

We departed Wilmington about 8:15 a.m. this morning. It was a bit chilly, probably in the neighborhood of 50 degrees, but nice and sunny.  As we were approaching the Greenway through a winding set of neighborhood streets, a right turn on our route was entry into a gated community! One thing none of the RWGPS maps show are gated communities! We quickly routed around this issue and were soon on the Greenway route.

Our first discovery was the high west wind! Our route today is primarily westward! Believe it or not, North Myrtle Beach is basically west of Wilmington NC. We organized and created a “pace line” in order to allow us to switch off and only have one person fighting the wind at a time. I believe this really saved us a ton of energy.

Eighteen miles into the ride we boarded the ferry from Fort Fisher to Southport. Easy on, prop bikes, and enjoy the trip. About 20 minutes later we rolled off in Southport to continue our trip. Some photos from the Ferry ride.

We again encountered a couple of high speed highways with little or no berm. One place for about 10 miles there was construction. The berm in this area was especially narrow. Again, traffic was mostly courteous with an occasional person that either did not understand the NC 4 foot law or was just being rude.

We passed through Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach. We arrived South Carolina and of course must stop for a photo opportunity!

Coming into N Myrtle Beach, we took Sea Mountain Highway. This road has a swinging “drawbridge”. It was “swung” when we got to it. Below are several photos of the bridge.

Today’s ride was 74.2 miles and we climbed 1,247 feet. So far on Year 3 we have traveled 356 miles and climbed 8,581. Below are the map and elevation profile from today.

Our grand totals for our ECG trip are now 1,970.8 miles and we have climbed 70,005 feet in elevation gain.
