Year 3 - Day 2 Durham NC to Clayton NC


Today we left the hotel about 8:30 a.m. The East Coast Greenway Alliance national office is in Durham NC just a few miles (8) from the hotel.  We routed off the American Tobacco Trail to the complex where the office is located. After searching for a while, we finally located the office. Niles and Mary-Paige greeted us and took some photos and a short video. The photo below has the four of us and Niles on the greenway just outside their offices. Can’t await to see how bad we did on the video!

A little further down the American Tobacco Trail we enjoyed the facilities provided by the city of Cary NC. Gary wanted his picture taken to send back to a friend and I also snapped a photo of some artwork at the trail head. 

Today’s ride was almost all trails, mostly paved. In fact, if we had not gone half way around Cary on trails, we could have shortened the ride by about 20 miles. I kept seeing signs about the town of Cary! After leaving the Cary town limits, we rode about 6 to 8 miles through the woods on a very rough gravel road near the Raleigh airport. It was tooth jarring! In fact, it appears that this road was the cause of Dan’s fender breaking at the seat stay connection.

We rode 76.7 miles, climbed 3,353 feet, for a total ride time of 7 hours and 8 minutes. Below is a map and a ride profile from today’s ride.

Year 4 - Day 10 - Marathon to Key West FL

  Toady is the last day of riding for our ECG journey! We spent the night at a quaint little “fishing resort” called Rainbow End Resort. This was the only lodging that I could find in or around Marathon Key that did not require full payment in advance. We made our reservations in March for this trip, so anything could happen between booking and the trip. It was clean and recently renovated. The buildings were only about 50 feet from the ocean and not much space for tide changes. I was amazed to discover that the tide in this area is only about +/- 1 foot!  The resort has a restaurant called the Hideaway Cafe Restaurant. We made the assumption that it would be open and the perfect place to eat dinner when we arrived, only a short walk, couple steps up to the second level! Gary discovered that it was closed on Monday and Tuesday. Unfortunately it was Tuesday! Year 4 - Prologue

We had arrived in Key West on Wednesday. Thursday morning, we rode our completely stripped bikes to the "We Cycle" bike shop in downtown Key West. "We Cycle" Bike shop packs bikes in Key West for $75 each.  I should have known there would be issues when I announced to the older gentleman in the shop that we were there to have our bikes packed for shipment and he gave me the deer in the headlights stare! A younger worker came to his rescue and helped take our bikes. When I contacted them earlier in the year to ensure we did not need reservations, etc. I was not informed that even though they had two shops, one in actual "downtown" Key West, it was their other location a slight distance away (about 3 miles) in New Town that actually packs the bikes. We were given the option to take the bikes there or leave them in downtown and downtown would have the bikes transferred to the other location. Year 4 - PA ECG Team getting ready for departure

 Greetings, The PA ECG Team is preparing to complete our four-year adventure from Callis ME to Key West FL.  This year we will be taking Amtrak Keystone service from Mount Joy, PA to Philadelphia PA, then catching the Silver Meteor to Jacksonville FL. We will be departing Sunday Nov 3 at approx. 9:38 a.m. and arriving in Jacksonville on Monday, November 4 at approx. 7 a.m. We utilize the Roomette feature of Amtrak.  It is a seating cabin during the day and after dinner, the conductor turns it into a sleeping cabin by changing the seats into a bed and lowering the upper bunk. I find the bed very hard and sleeping in a moving rail car difficult, but I do manage to get a little sleep. Hopefully, enough to fuel me from Jacksonville to St Augustine FL. as we will begin riding once we hit Florida soil. This is the map of our adventure for this year.
